The locusts are singing
The sun is red
It’s gotten so late somehow
There’s gonna be trouble
You know what they say
We should have been home now
We should have been home now

"Home By Now" Meat Loaf

Anna knelt next to Dwayne, pressing her hands to the hole in his chest, trying to stop the blood from pouring out of it. She was in fang, her actions frantic. “Don’t die on me,” she whispered, pressing harder against the wound. “Damn you, don’t die on me.” The shirt she pressed against his chest quickly became saturated with his blood, turning a dark reddish-black. Her hands shook as she worked to save him. To save her vampire.

The thunder is rolling
The sky is black
It’s gotten so dark somehow
There’s gonna be danger
God I wish we were back
We should have been home by now
We should have been home by now

Near the two David clutched the wooden stake in his hand, staring at the bloody tip. He’d missed the heart. But he didn’t regret missing at all. What he did regret was the fact that he had stabbed his lieutenant in the first place. He turned his gaze to Dwayne, flinching back in horror. The vampire’s blood covered his body, splattered along the floor, and had soaked into Anna’s clothing. All that blood pooling on the floor, all flowing from Dwayne’s body because of David’s own jealousy. The thought brought flashes of pain to the leader.

No matter what they tell us
No matter what they do
No matter what they teach us
What we believe is true

Still the vampiress pressed against the wound, trying unsuccessfully to staunch the flow of stolen blood, which slid from the dark vampire’s body. Tears slid down her cheeks unheeded as she bent over his body, putting all her weight behind blocking the wound. It didn’t help. Still the blood poured from his body, covering her pale hands until they were as red as the sunset.

No matter what they call us
However they attack
No matter where they take us
We’ll find our own way back

Scraping one claw down her wrist, she held it to Dwayne’s lips, trying to force him to drink. But by David’s decree she had not fed in days, and had little blood left herself. And Dwayne turned his head away from the wound, refusing to drink from her.

I can’t deny what I believe
I can’t be what I’m not
I know I’ll love forever
I know . . .no matter what

“I won’t kill you to save myself,” he said, voice low. “No matter what.”

“You can’t die,” Anna whimpered, face falling from fang. Her face looked so young, so innocent, though her eyes were filled with enough pain to belie that appearance. “You can’t leave me.”

If only tears were laughter
If only night was day
If only prayers were answered
Then we would hear God say:
No matter what they tell you
No matter what they do
No matter what they teach you
What you believe is true

Dwayne lifted one hand to caress Anna’s cheek. “You can survive,” he whispered, coughing, choking on his own blood. He forced a sad smile up to her. “You have to survive. You’re strong. You’re mine.” His eyes shone with so much emotion that Anna had to close her own eyes to try to hide the pain.

And I will keep you safe and strong
And sheltered from the storm
No matter where it’s barren
A dream is being born

“I don’t want to live,” Anna returned, rubbing her cheek against his hand and opening her eyes. “Not without you.” Her tears fell down her cheeks in glittering lines, dripping to splatter against his chest, mixing with the blood there.

No matter who they follow
No matter where they lead
No matter how they judge us
I’ll be everyone you need

“Don’t speak like that,” Dwayne said, his fingers still playing across her skin. “You gave up so much for us. That meant more than you can ever know. You were our Protector in every meaning of the word. You saved me, not just my life, but me.” The truth shone in his eyes.

No matter if the sun don’t shine
Or if the skies are blue
No matter what the ending
My life began with you

“I’d give it all up again to save you,” she whispered, one hand drifting up to cover his hand where it rested against her cheek. Her other hand left his wound, resting against his cheek, leaving a trail of blood wherever she touched. “Please don’t leave me.”

I can’t deny what I believe
I can’t be what I’m not
I know this love’s forever
I know
No matter what

“I would give anything to not leave you,” Dwayne muttered, turning his head to kiss her palm, his own blood covering his lips. “Anything. You’re the only one I’ve ever loved.” A single tear slid down his cheek, pristine in its beauty. “I love you more than anything.”

I can’t deny what I believe
I can’t be what I’m not
I know this love’s forever
That’s all that matters now
No matter what

Anna’s sobs filled the room as the light left Dwayne’s eyes. Her body slowly sank in on itself until she had collapsed onto his prone form, his blood sliding along her skin in a disturbing caress. “My Dwayne,” she whispered brokenly. “I failed.” Her body shuddered with sobs as she lay against his body. “I love you.” Her last words left her lips moments before David plunged the bloody stake through her heart and into Dwayne’s body, so that both their hearts were pierced by the piece of wood.

The leader then stood, staring down at the two lovers, as close in death as in life. He brushed one gloved hand across his face, perhaps wiping away the last traces of tears, then walked out into the bright sunlight, welcoming the burning pain that overwhelmed his body.

The thunder is rolling
The sky is black
It’s gotten so dark somehow
There’s gonna be danger
God, I wish we were back
We should have been home by now
We should have been home by now
